The Big Norm Story
HOW THIS ALL BEGAN
Big Norm in his pen .

Robert Peterson , a retired Connecticut state policeman,
moved to Hubbardsville, N.Y. in 1999. There he settled on a
little hobby farm where he raised among other things ,pigs.
Bob Peterson raised Big Norm for a service sire for the
female pigs on his farm. Although Norm got regular hog feed
the same as all the rest of the pigs he started to grow to
freakish proportions and soon it was evident Norm was no
ordinary pig. Peterson was unable to achieve the logistics of
getting Norm weighed, but a cooperative extension agent was
able to calculate his weight at 1600 pounds based on his
measurements. The big pig is nearly 8 feet long, 4 foot high,
very wide, and his belly drags the ground. Peterson named
the huge beast Norm after the character in " Cheers "; Norm
Peterson. The name " Big Norm " emerged from that. Bob
was  proud of Norm and showed him off as often as possible.
Word spread fast , people started streaming to Peterson's
farm to see Norm and a local star was born . Bob contacted
The Post Standard newspaper in Syracuse ,N.Y. and staff
writer Alaina Potrikus did an article on the big pig in the
November 19, 2004 paper and a regional star was born. Then
the Associated Press picked up Potrikus' story and a national
star was born. The public interest in Big Norm was
astounding. Peterson began to make plans on sharing Norm
with the rest of the world. Unfortunately Bob died suddenly
December 5, 2004. But his good friend Kerry Dart stepped
forward to care for Norm and advance his celebrity. Hence the
reason for this website, the public has been so eagerly
interested in Norm that it was incumbent of his owners to
create this website to share him . And so we give you NORM.
